Remember Louie Bellson!

Posted on February 14, 2010

One year ago the great Big Band Drummer Louie Bellson died aged 84.

Louie worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Benny Goodman, just to name a few. He was also a composer, arranger and the first drummer to play a double bass set up.

When you think of the greatest original Big Band Drummers you must think of Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Louie Bellson…

Still alive and kicking!

Posted on September 22, 2009

I’m sorry for my long abstinence. I thank you for your visit and mails. Here’s a small update:

I’m currently playing drums in the Cover Rock Band “Airbag”, helping them out because their original drummer has sadly experienced a painful prolapsed intervertebral disc. Sounds scary, eh?

We have a couple of gigs in Germany, playing everything from 1hour or 2hour sets at small festivals, indoor and open air, as well as 3hour+ shows at biker clubs and private events.

The setlist features a good portion of AC/DC, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin Songs, which is always great fun to play. The repertoire reaches from very old Neil Young to hip Foo Fighters, from Black Sabbath to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It’s pretty much work for me, sometimes my arms hurt after a gig, but it feels good to be back on stage.

Beside that i’m thinking about new lessons, also video lessons, to show you here on dooDrum.com. If you have ideas or want me to show you something special, please let me know.

So long, i must prepare for tonight’s rehearsals. See you on the road ;)

The Bo Diddley Sound File is here!

Posted on September 3, 2008

I’m happy that you like my demonstration of the Bo Diddley Beat.

And because many people asked for it, i will also give you the mp3 sound file of that cool drum groove.

It’s the same thing that you can hear in the original flash file but you can do with it whatever you want:

Use it as a play along,  edit it to get longer loops, even share it with your friends, teachers and students. dooDrum.com owns the copyright of this file and gives you the permission to mess it up ;)

Only 2 little no-go’s: Don’t use the file for commercial reasons! Instead, tell everybody about the creator dooDrum.com.

I hope you have fun and get some inspiration…

Rock Drumming is harder than Football!

Posted on August 1, 2008

If you ever performed a full-length Rock Show or day-long rehearsal you probably know that drumming can make you tired.

But would you expect that drumming in a professional Rockband can be even harder than playing a first-league football (soccer) match? Yeah, you thought something that way but now you can be sure!

British scientists of the Universities of Chichester and Gloucestershire just found out that drummers need to have a condition like sportsmen.

Clem Burke

They connected Blondie-Drummer Clem Burke – who had also played with Iggy Pop, Pete Townshend and Bob Dylan – with a number of medical instruments to measure the drummer’s physical exertion during a 90min live performance.

And then they did the same with the Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo.

You know what? Both guys work on the same powerful level!

With the only exception that Ronaldo has to play about 40 – 50 matches per year but Clem Burke does at least 100 Live Shows in the same stretch.

The leader of the project, Marcus Smith, shows great respect to drummers: “Musicians need to have an extra-ordinary fitness when they’re on tour.”

On pitch/stage Ronaldo and Burke experience an average pulse of 140/150 bpm with peaks at 190. They burn between 400 and 600 calories per hour. And that’s the point of the study:

Smith and Burke just opened a “Drummer Labor” where over-weighted teenagers can drum their kilos away. Salute!

Score Reading From Scratch: Part 1

Posted on July 31, 2008

Counting 4 Quarter-Notes, creating measures by adding bar lines!

In an earlier post i told you 5 common rumors about drum notes and why it’s important to get into score reading.

Now it’s time to start a workshop series for absolute beginners. You will learn to fool around with those f**g notes and how you can use them to master your playing.

It’s a start from scratch so it possibly bores the more experienced of you… but it also might be an inspiration for some.

So calm down, notes are cool, and this workshop will take the pain from you ;)

If you’re looking for more advanced score stuff here on dooDrum.com i recommend the post Chris Frazier Transcription
