Introduction To Drum Rudiments!

After nearly 3 weeks there’s a good bunch of basic articles online and it’s time to do something more concrete… something loud… something cool!

I will start to talk about Drum Rudiments this weekend! And i will try to let it be as much fun as possible.

What? You don’t know what Drum Rudiments are? No problem, i will show you. To give bloody beginners an idea, read this short introduction to Drum Rudiments…

Introduction to Drum Rudiments

When you play on a Snare Drum with both hands you can create lots of different runs. For example, you can make alternating strokes with you right and left hand:

R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L

You also can make 2 strokes after another by using the same hand: R-R-L-L

Now imagine to put those 2 figures together and create interesting combinations, like: R-L-R-R-L-R-L-L

We drummers call such combinations and drum sequences “Rudiments“. They are the keys to modern drumming… no, they are the keys to drumming at all.

Piano Players and Guitarists have their Scales, Drummers have their Rudiments.

If you didn’t notice Rudiments before, don’t be afraid of them. Most Rudiments are easy to understand, though some can be very tricky. But the good thing is that learning and practicing of Drum Rudiments will push your drumming some light-years forward! Even with the very basic ones you can add absolute stunning effects to your drumming.

So again: Why Rudiments?

You also could ask: Why Drumming? :) Rudiments are your friends, they add musicality to your playing and make you feel good. Drum Rudiments give you the ability to play things you want to play!

I will give you a clear introduction to the basic Drum Rudiments here on dooDrum.com. And don’t forget: “Basic” does not mean “Simple” or “not worth practicing”. So long, stay tuned ;)
