Kick-Ass Drum Solos: Ian Paice
Posted on June 15, 2008
Sunday afternoon, what else could be better than clicking over to youtube.com and grab some very rare drum treasures.
And i found something for you!
The video shows Ian Paice of Deep Purple, playing his famous Drum-Solo in the song “The Mule” during DP’s “Machine Head” Tour in 1972. It’s still spectacular!
This solo changed everything!
When i first heard this kind of solo on Deep Purple’s “Made in Japan” Album i couldn’t believe my ears.
Ian Paice’s Speed, Power, Dynamic and Taste is something i often miss when i listen to young drummers.
It’s no question that Ian Paice became a big influence - maybe the biggest influence - for me. I still can’t get enough of his drumming.
Great technique and control!
Note how Ian Paice is controlling his sticks! This is how Stick Control works when you practiced enough ;)
His technique is fantastic, Ian flips through the single strokes and doubles like crazy!
Ian Paice kick-ass Drum Solo!
I guess this video was taken from the “Deep Purple - Live in Concert 72/73″ DVD. A thousand thanks to EMI Electrola for releasing this raw diamond.
The sound quality (not to speak about the camera) is no state-of-the-art, but who would expect that from such an old tape.
Take a couple of minutes and have fun with Ian Paice, his Solos really changed the world in those times:
More information about Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice!

Ian Paice is left-handed and plays “the other way round”, but because he is well-educated both hands can do the same. Ian Paice plays matched grip.
In the video the band performes “The Mule” which is a song dedicated to the drummer and first released on the “Fireball” studio album in 1971. The long Drum-Solo only appears in the live versions.
It’s the “Mark 2″ line-up of Deep Purple, on stage are Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums) and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar).
Also listen to the “Made in Japan” Live Album which is another milestone and/or get the DVD “Deep Purple - Live in Concert 72/73″ which contains more antique versions of Deep Purple’s “Machine Head” Tour.
Last not least i want to thank “Fragellant” for posting Ian’s Solo on youtube.com.
Search youtube for more motion pictures of Ian Paice and check out “Deep Purple’s official website” (Yes, they’re still alive and kicking!).
Thanks for your interest.
