Are you getting tired? Did you play too heavy and lost control over your thumb? Or do you think using this sick grip is the only way to play your soft tunes? Enjoy another part of the dooDrum.com Sick Sticks…
The sleeping thumb
Only the Mid-, Ring-, and Pinky Fingers are “holding” the stick. Index and Thumb got lost somewhere in space! This can happen when you played too heavy, probably with the wrong (too thin or light) sticks.
Or your technique is too poor for playing quiet and relaxed but still with a tight grip. It’s a common mistake that people think they had to loosen the grip for playing softly. Okay, it’s clear that you really hold the sticks more relaxed when it comes to soft music, but you always have to stay in touch with the sticks!

This Sick Stick Grip can be dangerous, because the stick is wabbling to all sides, making it pretty hard to control the drumming. No matter if you are playing Heavy Metal or Smooth Jazz, in the next moment you will loose the stick – that embarrassing event we drummers hate so much.
Sometimes the thumb just strikes
The thumb has to do much work, it’s no wonder that the muscles get tired. Unfortunately this can easily happen during a live performance! You know, the monitoring is bad, your concentration is low, emotions high, you hit much harder than in the rehearsal room or studio…
But you still have a chance as long the thumb doesn’t hurt. Shake the hand out after the song, grab another pair of sticks and try to play more relaxed – at least with the tired hand.
With a little luck it comes back to normal after some minutes. Good Luck ;)
