The first dooDrum.com Drum Lesson is finally online! It’s an introduction to the Single Stroke Roll, performed by me, a pair of sticks and a practice pad. I hope you like it.
It’s hosted on youtube, you can visit my account: youtube.com/dooDrumDotCom. But it’s better to watch the video lesson right here on dooDrum.com because i give you further information and even a PDF-Download of the score, to make sure you understand what i’m doing…
Yet another youtube drummer
There are many great drummers on youtube already. I recommend to watch as many of them as you can. Because you will learn from everything you see, even the poor stuff.
But i would be honored if you would enjoy my videos as well. I always start very slowly and get the camera as close as possible, i believe this is the best way to show you the essential.
So have fun with the first clip of my “No Bla! dooDrum!” Serie.
Single Stroke Roll Introduction Video Lesson
First i need to say that i’m sorry for the small synch issue in the last part of the video. While the original file runs well, something strange happens after i uploaded it to youtube. Don’t mind that, i will try to fix that problem.
Here we go, i play a long run of Single Strokes, playing 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 notes. No triplets, only straight binary strokes. Download the Score here!
And now take 3 minutes and watch the vid:
The second part of the video
In the second half i play a shorter run of the same single strokes but filmed it from another angle (#2). I thought this could be a helpful feature. And after that i perform it again, but this time i start with the left hand (#3).
Yes, i think you should switch your leading hand as often as you can. I know it’s hard. But contemporary drumming needs a skilled “poor” hand. Just forget that you are right-handed or left-handed.
You want to know how you can fight the slowness, the bad feel and missing power of your poor hand – left or right, whatever? Well, the answer is in the video. Such lessons are exactly what you should do in your daily drum sessions.
1/32 too fast for you?
If you can’t catch the 1/32 part, don’t play it. In the score you will find an alternative run that’s without the 1/32 notes. Start playing slowly – like always – and speed up the metronome, each day a little bit more. It takes time but you will make it.
I hope you like the vid lesson. You can be sure that this won’t be the last of the “No Bla!” Series. Next time i will demonstrate the… hm… Double Stroke? Or Paradiddle? We will see, have fun… and thanks for watching.
